About Batik – The Art Behind the Board

Why your mancala board is also a piece of living cultural heritage

Batik is a traditional Javanese art form using a wax-resist dyeing technique practiced for centuries. The word itself comes from two Javanese roots: amba ("to write") and titik ("dots or points") – a name that reflects the painstaking detail each piece demands. In 2009, UNESCO recognized batik as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The oldest form, batik tulis, involves a slow process of drawing wax directly onto a surface by hand. We've applied this same technique to the wood surface of each mancala board, bringing a centuries-old textile tradition into an entirely new medium.

The three stages of batik making:

    1. Mencanting: Hot wax is hand-drawn onto the surface using a copper-tipped tool or canting, tracing every intricate pattern lines by hand.
    2. Mewarna: The surface is dyed. Waxed areas resist the color, preserving the drawn pattern
    3. Finishing: The board is dried and treated with a fixing agent to seal the colors

    How to Play Mancala

⚠️ Safety notice: Cowrie shells are a choking hazard. Children under 8 must be supervised by an adult at all times during gameplay.

    Setting Up

Place the board lengthwise between two players. Each player controls the five pits closest to them and their Store (the large pit on their right).

    Gameplay

    • Each player's score is the number of seeds in their Store.
    • Fill all small pits with seeds, except the Stores.
    • On your turn, pick up all seeds from one of your pits and drop them one by one counterclockwise, including your Store but skipping your opponent’s Store.

    Winning the Game

The game ends when one player’s pits are empty. The opponent collects any remaining seeds in their pits and adds them to their Store. The player with the most seeds in their Store wins!
