The History Behind Coal Iron in Southeast Asia

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the European colonial powers introduced the Western-style charcoal box iron across Southeast Asia. Before its arrival, communities pressed fabric with flat wooden paddles, or in the Philippines, a foot-operated wooden press called a prinsa de paa.

Local artisans quickly adapted the design, hand-casting their own versions in brass or iron. It became known as the prensa in Filipino (from the Spanish word for "press"), a household staple until rural electrification phased it out in the mid-to-late 20th century.

In Bahasa language, the word for iron – setrika – comes directly from the Dutch strijkijzer ("device for smoothing clothes").

In Malaysia and Singapore, the dhobi ghat – laundry-and-ironing trade emerged in the 19th century when the British brought Indian laundry workers into the region.

About the Rooster Latch Design

The rooster shape comes from a simple visual similarity: the latch that opens the iron's lid has an upright profile with a curved, beak-like hook for gripping. Stylized, that silhouette reads like a rooster's body in side profile – a small design flourish that turns a purely functional part into a decorative one.
