This trinket basket is handwoven from natural fern stems (Lygodium circinnatum), topped with a lid carved by hand into the shape of a frog. It is made by artisans from using a fiber-basketry technique passed down through generations of village craftspeople.

About the Handwoven Basket Craft

In traditional Lombok villages, homes rarely had cupboards or cabinets, so woven baskets served as the primary storage for clothing, trinkets, and household items. Basket weaving remained practical because the raw materials could be gathered from nearby fields and forest, and the weaving itself could be done in spare moments between other work. The result is a container that is lightweight, durable, and portable, qualities that have kept the craft alive for generations.

About the Material

Lygodium circinnatum, also locally known as ketak, is a fern stem mostly gathered from the wilderness rather than cultivated, making it an accessible material within Lombok's weaving tradition. Researchers Cunningham and Brinckmann have documented ketak's importance to global fiber basketry, noting that demand for this fiber grew from tens of millions of stems a year in the early 1980s to well over a billion stems annually, feeding a global market worth more than US$26 million by 2020.
