Slit drum is a traditional communication device between the villagers. It produces sound by striking near the sides of the slit with a wooden stick. Each village has its own set of codes, based on the frequency, interval or rhythm produced when striking the drum, for instance, two quick strikes might signal an approaching storm or convey other urgent messages.

The Asmat tribe resides in the remote part of Papua. The tribe has been globally recognized for their wood carving artistry. Their culture is deeply rooted in various artistic pursuits: carving, weaving, singing and dancing.

This slit drum is carved from natural dark solid wood. Asmat artisans blend function and form, turning everyday objects into works of art that reflects the spiritual bond between humans and nature. To this day, the skilled wood carvers are among the most respected members in their community.
